{"id":56008,"date":"2020-09-19T19:04:46","date_gmt":"2020-09-19T19:04:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wordpress_X\/index.php\/2020\/09\/19\/johan-kristoffersson-wins-in-latvia-to-extend-championship-lead\/"},"modified":"2020-09-19T19:04:46","modified_gmt":"2020-09-19T19:04:46","slug":"johan-kristoffersson-wins-in-latvia-to-extend-championship-lead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insideracing.com\/johan-kristoffersson-wins-in-latvia-to-extend-championship-lead\/","title":{"rendered":"Johan Kristoffersson wins in Latvia to extend Championship lead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sweden\u2019s Johan Kristoffersson claimed his 23rd career victory at the World RX of Riga-Latvia, round five of the World Rallycross Championship, to extend his Drivers\u2019 Championship lead.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Kristoffersson took his third win of the 2020 World RX season with Kristoffersson Motorsport, leading the final in Riga for all six laps in a Volkswagen Polo. The Swedish driver qualified second in the Intermediate Classification, took victory in semi-final two, and won the final to extend his Championship lead to 21 points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sweden\u2019s Mattias Ekstrom battled his way to victory in semi-final one to start on row one of the final, then used a superior joker lap strategy by KYB Team JC team to take second, his fourth podium of the 2020 season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Team Hansen\u2019s Timmy Hansen completed the podium to not only make it an all-Swedish top three but to ensure the podium was filled by World RX Drivers\u2019 Champions (Kristoffersson 2017-18, Ekstrom 2016, Hansen 2019).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The TQ (top qualifier) position in the Intermediate Classification was taken by Finland\u2019s Niclas Gronholm, the winner of World RX round four in Finland. The GRX Taneco driver finished second in semi-final one, then had a battle with Sweden\u2019s Kevin Hansen in the final but spun out of podium contention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-56006\" src=\"https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wordpress_X\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/WorldRX_of_Riga_Latvia_Race_1.jpg\" alt=\"WorldRX of Riga Latvia Race 1\" width=\"1200\" height=\"798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/WorldRX_of_Riga_Latvia_Race_1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/WorldRX_of_Riga_Latvia_Race_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/WorldRX_of_Riga_Latvia_Race_1-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/WorldRX_of_Riga_Latvia_Race_1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/WorldRX_of_Riga_Latvia_Race_1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/WorldRX_of_Riga_Latvia_Race_1-450x299.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Kevin Hansen climbed to second at the start of the final from row three and took his joker on lap two. He defended from Gronholm for over two laps, then challenged brother Timmy Hansen for the final podium place at the last corner of the race. He finished fourth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Gronholm was classified fifth and Sweden\u2019s Robin Larsson, Ekstrom\u2019s KYB Team JC teammate was sixth, following contact and a spin at the second corner. KYB Team JC maintained its position in the lead of the Teams\u2019 Championship standings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThis feels very good. We were really pushing hard in Q2 and Q3, I was not really able to pull off the best times, but instead we had some good tyres for the semi-final and final so I think we had a big jump on our competitors or terms of tyres, then we had two good starts, and everything is much easier when you have fresh tyres.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Big thanks to the team, we made some changes between Q3 and the semi-final and it actually made the car better so that feels good to gamble and go in the right direction,\u201d said winner Kristoffersson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ekstrom\u2019s podium was the 25th of his career. \u201cThe first corner of the final was a little bit too exciting, I don\u2019t know exactly what happened to Robin, we\u2019ll have to watch the television, but it was a bit messy and after I drove as fast as I could behind Kevin. After he jokered I had a clear track and ended up P2.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;For sure that was not our wish when we came here, we wanted to win but during qualifying we were not good enough so we couldn\u2019t do good enough starts so we couldn\u2019t be at the front in Q1 and Q2. When you\u2019re on the back foot then you have to try and recover and I think P2 is a good recovery, but you need to be spot on to win these races especially when the other guys are in top shape as well,\u201d said Ekstrom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hansen was pleased with a podium finish after a hard-fought day in Riga. \u201cWe had a tough day. We see glimpses of really good performance, some good launches and I\u2019ve been fastest on lap time many times today, but you know when you\u2019re not up front then it\u2019s not easy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;We need to improve those launches so we can be at the front of the races from the beginning. I must say coming in third is really good and I\u2019m super happy about that. The team has worked so hard and it is paying off, but at this level, it\u2019s a slow process to gain speed, but I\u2019m quite confident tomorrow will be even better,\u201d said Hansen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Norway\u2019s Andreas Bakkerud, racing a Renault Megane RS RX for the Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel team was fourth in semi-final one after he lost time in turn two of the race. ALL-INKL.COM Muennich Motorsport\u2019s Timo Scheider, from Germany, was fourth in semi-final two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> He qualified 13th in the Intermediate Classification but started the semi-finals when his teammate Rene Muennich withdrew. Scheider used the joker lap strategy to beat GRX Taneco\u2019s Timur Timerzyanov, from Russia. Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel\u2019s Liam Doran, from Great Britain was classified sixth in the same race. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Latvia\u2019s Reinis Nitiss, on his debut in the Esmotorsport Skoda Fabia, beat GRX SET\u2019s Krisztian Szabo, from Hungary, for fifth in semi-final one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Germany\u2019s Rene Muennich was classified 13th in the final results following his withdrawal from the semi-finals that lifted his ALL-INKL.COM Muennich Motorsport team mate Scheider into the top 12. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">GCK Bilstein\u2019s Anton Marklund, from Sweden, was 14th Unkorrupted team mates Guerlain Chicherit, from France, and Rokas Baciuska, from Lithuania were 15th and 16th in their Renault Clios. Ferratum Team\u2019s Jani Paasonen, from Finland, retired from Q2 with a technical problem and didn\u2019t take part in Q3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Norway\u2019s Sondre Evjen (Volkswagen Polo) is top qualifier after Q2 in the FIA European Rallycross Championship for Supercar. France\u2019s Jean-Baptiste Dubourg (Peugeot 208) is second and Norway\u2019s Ben-Philip Gundersen (Audi S1) is third. Championship leader winner OIiver Eriksson (Ford Fiesta) had a difficult day but recovered to be fifth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the second round of the Projekt E category \u2013 the first ever international electric rallycross series \u2013 at the halfway stage France\u2019s Cyril Raymond is top qualifier on day one, racing a new Citroen C3 ERX. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Latvia\u2019s Janis Baumanis was quickest in Q1 and is second in a Ford Fiesta ERX.
