{"id":59085,"date":"2021-07-16T16:59:36","date_gmt":"2021-07-16T16:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wordpress_X\/index.php\/2021\/07\/16\/rovanpera-shines-keeps-breen-at-bay-in-estonia-battle\/"},"modified":"2021-07-16T16:59:36","modified_gmt":"2021-07-16T16:59:36","slug":"rovanpera-shines-keeps-breen-at-bay-in-estonia-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insideracing.com\/rovanpera-shines-keeps-breen-at-bay-in-estonia-battle\/","title":{"rendered":"Rovanpera shines &#038; keeps Breen at bay in Estonia battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Kalle Rovanpera laid early claim to Estonia\u2019s king of speed title on Friday by winning six of the eight special stages to lead the country\u2019s World Rally Championship encounter.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The 20-year-old Finn, who now lives in the Baltic country, ended Rally Estonia\u2019s first full day with an 8.5sec advantage over Craig Breen after enthralling action over blisteringly fast gravel roads south of second city Tartu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Both men are hunting their maiden WRC win and such was the ferocity of their duel that the experienced Thierry Neuville and seven-time world champion S\u00e9bastien Ogier were trailing almost a minute adrift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Rovanpera, who led after Thursday night\u2019s short curtain-raising test, won three of this morning\u2019s stages in his Toyota Yaris. He added three more fastest times this afternoon but could not break free from Breen\u2019s shackles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Breen led briefly this morning. He won one stage, tied with Rovanpera in another and was second in six tests in his Hyundai i20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The heat of the battle was matched by air temperatures hovering just below 30\u00b0C, but pre-event favourite and Estonian hero Ott T\u00e4nak was left feeling cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-59083\" src=\"https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wordpress_X\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021ESTONIA_AUS_6601.jpg\" alt=\"2021ESTONIA AUS 6601\" width=\"1200\" height=\"798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021ESTONIA_AUS_6601.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021ESTONIA_AUS_6601-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021ESTONIA_AUS_6601-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021ESTONIA_AUS_6601-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021ESTONIA_AUS_6601-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/insideracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021ESTONIA_AUS_6601-450x299.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He won the opening Arula test to relegate Rovanpera from top spot but plunged to seventh after a front right puncture in the following Otep\u00e4\u00e4. Worse was to come in the next stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI went wide in a corner and basically I went on the field and during that I knocked off two tyres. I had another two punctures and obviously we had no spares anymore and it was not possible to continue,\u201d explained T\u00e4nak, who began the loop with just one spare wheel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Neuville and Ogier were left to scrap over third. Neuville lost time with a rear left puncture while the championship leader drove superbly to minimise the handicap of opening the soft and sandy roads, where grip was reduced compared to those further back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They traded positions before Neuville moved ahead in the penultimate stage to finish 6.0sec in front and 53.4sec off the lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Elfyn Evans twice overshot junctions. He never recovered the time lost to end 15.7sec adrift of team-mate Ogier and nearly two minutes clear of Teemu Suninen\u2019s Ford Fiesta. A rear left puncture and a suspected water pump issue delayed the Finn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pierre-Louis Loubet was seventh in an i20 WRC. FIA WRC3 leader and reigning European champion Alexey Lukyanuk, FIA WRC2 pace-setter Andreas Mikkelsen (Toksport WRT) and Lukyanuk\u2019s class contender Emil Lindholm completed the leaderboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Takamoto Katsuta retired his Yaris from third after co-driver Dan Barritt suffered a back injury after a heavy landing over jump. Gus Greensmith exited after stopping several times with a technical issue which affected the power from his Fiesta\u2019s engine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Saturday brings four challenging new stages for the longest leg of the event, containing 132.18km of action.
